Beck at The Beeb (1995 BBC Radio 1 Sessions)

Since I have been been geeking out over Beck for the last few weeks in anticipation of seeing him headline the XPoNential Music Festival on Sunday night, I thought I would share some rare recordings of his that I've added to my music collection over the years.

In the fall of 1995, Beck went into the studio to record four tracks for BBC Radio 1, all of which shared a common theme of disillusionment. Whether it be with the record industry, failed relationships or critics, it was clear that the young artist had grown uneasy with the effects of his sudden fame.

This session came roughly a year after the folk-rap oddity, “Loser” became an unexpected hit and made Beck the poster boy for goofball slackers around the world. And, it would still be another year before he would end all speculation of his potential one-hit wonder status by releasing the groundbreaking album, Odelay in 1996 which he co-produced with The Dust Brothers.

These songs paint a picture of an artist resolved to shake off his reputation as the Gen X court jester and be taken seriously on his own terms.

It is clear that a deliberate effort was made to distance the music here from anything that might recall the gimmicky fun of “Loser”. Three of the four tracks are recorded with sparse acoustic arrangements and there is little humor to be found. It was here that the mainstream got it’s first, fleeting glimpse of the earnest and thoughtful Beck who would not fully reveal himself to world until the release of 1998’s Mutations.

First up is a re-recording of of “Cyanide Breath Mint”, a song that originally appeared (with alternate lyrics) on Beck’s classic lo-fi folk album, One Foot In The Grave. Despite the slicker production and a more upbeat tempo, this performance manages to preserve the song’s sense of cynical melancholy. Personally, I have always preferred this version to the original.

These sessions also introduced an early version of the song “Jack-Ass” which would be released as a single from Odelay the following year. This straight ahead country rock rendition of the song  features a slide guitar and harmonica in lieu of the hypnotic keyboard sample from Them’s cover of “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” that would be added during the Odelay sessions with The Dust Brothers. Even without the glossy production, the song still shines as a great lonesome cowboy ballad.

The third track from the session is most commonly known as “Static 1” though it has been listed as “Baby” on various bootlegs that are in circulation. Not to be confused with the completely unrelated song, “Static”, which later appeared on Mutations, this haunting, finger-picked folk tune is probably the best Beck song you've never heard.

On the last track, Beck finally lets his freak flag fly (albeit in a decidedly non commercial manner) with this swaggering, noise rock cover of the Son House classic, “Grinnin’ In Your Face”. It features Beck shouting/singing the lyrics through a haze of distortion accompanied by harmonica, piano and electric guitar all shambling along to a raucous and disjointed blues groove.

The songs from these sessions eventually surfaced (often mislabeled) on bootlegs in the mid '90s, most notably on the unofficial 1996 release, Quodilbet which included a collection of BBC & MTV studio sessions, a handful of live tracks from the 1995 Reading Festival, and some alternate mixes of “Where It’s At” from the U.K. 12” single.

These  rare recordings reveal that from the beginning,  Beck was  much more than just another novelty act. The world just didn't know it yet...

T For Texas, T For (Superfly) TNT

Don’t mess with Texas?

Right about now Texas better be worried about messing with me.

Every time somebody mentions Texas, I’m "Superfly TNT"!

Seriously you guys, I’m really pissed at Texas.

Texas took my friends away. And I’m not just talking any friends. I’m talking the best of the best, like that Taekwondo movie with Eric Roberts and James Earl Jones.

I’m talking about the kind of friends you share the experience of transitioning into adulthood with. The kind that you can call without judgement to pick you up at a random Wawa at 3 A.M. if you’re having a rough night. The kind of friends you sing karaoke with EVERY weekend for 2 years. (One of one of my all-time favorite memories is performing a searing duet of AC/DC’s Big Balls with my friend Beth while she was 9 months pregnant with her first child. I still get weepy thinking about it…) You know the kind of friends I’m talking about...

These are the kind of friends who introduce you to your wife and soul mate, with whom you later start a family that means more to you than you thought anything in the world ever could. And your friends have their own family now too, who they love just as much as you love your family. And it’s fun and exciting to experience THAT together, just like was fun and exciting to hang out and party together when you were younger.

Except now instead of seeing each other every weekend, you see each other every few months. You’d like to see each other more, but you all have a lot more responsibility now, so you get together when you can. And it’s not like they live in another state or anything, right?

Then Texas comes into the picture...

...with it’s big skies, it’s big cars, and it’s big, stupid cowboy hats. And it’s big job promotions for your friend Dan…

A promotion so good, that Dan and his wife Beth make the tough decision to move to Texas because of the opportunity it affords them to secure a future for their family. And, even though you’re really happy for them, you’re kinda sad too.
Because you start to do the math...

If Pat & Beth (Did I mention my wife’s name is Beth too?) see their friends who live 25 miles away an average of 5 times a year, how many times a year will they see them if they move 1,500 miles away.

The answer is…

Actually, I have no idea what the answer is. I’m not that good at math. But I’m pretty sure it’s going to be less.

So yeah. I’m pretty pissed off at Texas.

I’ll be honest, I don’t really know anything about Texas except for the fact that The Alamo doesn’t have a basement. I decided that if my friends are going to be living there, I should learn a little bit about it. So, I decided to do a little research. Call it a background check...

And I have to be honest, what I found was quite disturbing....

For instance, did you know it is still a hanging offense in Texas to steal cattle or to put graffiti on someone else’s cow?

Still perfectly legal to eat them though!

Thank your lucky stars!

Speaking of stars…

They say the stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas. Do you know why?

There’s no pesky ozone layer blocking the view!

Texas is the nation’s largest producer of greenhouse gasses. If it were a country, it would rank as the world’s 7th largest producer.

Texas was an independent nation from 1836 to 1845. When it was annexed in 1845, it retained the right to fly its flag at the same height as the national flag.

Insecure much, Texas?

Dr Pepper was invented in Texas. Dr Pepper was a huge contributor to my childhood obesity, which in turn resulted in me never getting laid in high school.

Thanks for nothing!

There is a museum in Texas celebrating the invention of barbed wire! Can you believe that? Who’s that into barbed wire? I hate barbed wire! I don’t know about you guys, but personally I would like to be able to scale a fence without tearing my trousers.

WTF, Texas?

Fritos Pie is a popular snack food in Texas. It consists of a bag of Fritos mixed with chili, onions and cheese eaten straight from the bag. And although I admit that I don’t have any hard data to support it, this only reinforces my theory that Texas produces more diarrhea than any other state in the union.

The word “Texas” was the Spanish pronunciation “Tejas” of the Hasinai Indian word meaning “friends.”  In fact, the Texas state motto is “friendship.”

Today the Hasinai Indians are all but extinct.

Way to break the “Bro Code”, Texas. It’s supposed to be boys before Manifest Destiny...

Pretty scary stuff, eh?

I have to admit, after my research, I’m more distraught about Dan & Beth moving there than ever. But I’m going to try and give Texas the benefit of the doubt. Because although I will miss them dearly, I do sincerely want my friends to be happy and I truly hope that Texas turns out to be a great place for them to raise their family.

Plus, I can’t wait to visit, and make fun of it in person…

Personal feelings asides, I have to admit that Texas has produced a lot of great music over the years.  Here's a Spotify playlist featuring  some of the amazing musicians who hail from "The Lone Star State". It is interesting to note that although the genres vary from blues, to country, to hip-hop and beyond, there is an undercurrent of menace that seems to run through much of the music to come out of Texas.

The Black Keys Are Back, and Blue.

On their new album, Turn Blue, The Black Keys have teamed up once again with producer and collaborator, Danger Mouse to evolve their signature brand of glammed out garage rock into a psychedelic swirl of blue-eyed soul, space rock guitars, and bubblegum bass lines, all propelled along by Patrick Carney's primitive, Bonhamesque drumming.

Although some of the up-tempo, pop rock elements of 2012's El Camino are evident here, The Keys  have taken this opportunity lay back into the groove, creating a trippy soundscape where lyrics drenched in bluesy heartbreak combine with Floydian guitar work for a hook-laden journey through the cosmos. While not as immediately catchy as some of their previous work, patient listeners will discover new and interesting textures with repeated listens.

File this one under "Headphone Records".

Turn Blue is currently available to stream for free on iTunes:

Here Goes Nothing...

 Hi guys,

My name is Pat Kelly.

This is my blog.

As is customary with blogs, I’ll be using this space to write about stuff. Exactly what stuff will vary depending on my mood.

Topics will include my life, family, and career as well as books, music, horror movies, comics and anything else I might be geeking out over at any given moment. In addition to all that you might even see some fiction and long form humor pieces here. Sometimes it will be funny. Other times, not so much...

Regardless of content, I give you my word that no matter what I write here, I will do my best to make sure it is interesting.

I guess the best way for me to kick this thing off is to tell you a little bit about myself.

I have a beautiful wife who also happens to be one of the smartest people I know. She works in medicine and her dedication to her job and the people she cares for is almost unfathomable to me. Sometimes I well up just thinking about it. And she carries that same care and dedication over to her family. She is kind, loving and supportive, and she hates it when I rub my feet together.

Our daughter is almost two and she is already one of the most amazing people I have ever met. She likes to talk and be silly, and climb on things. Sometimes she does all three at the same time. Sometimes she makes up songs off the top of her head about mac n’ cheese. Did I mention that she’s a weirdo? I have to take credit for that one. She inherited my weirdness just as surely as she inherited my eyes. I just pray she doesn’t inherit my excessive back hair...

We have a dog. He is big and fuzzy and loveable. And, he sheds a lot. It is not uncommon to see a dog hair tumbleweed drift across our faux-hardwood floor if a breeze catches it just right. He has never chewed up one of my slippers, but he has pulled siding off the house and has completely destroyed our fence with his brute strength. One time he ate an entire Tiki Torch. He also has an unreasonable fear of ironing boards. The mere mention of the word sends him running for cover under the coffee table. It never gets old.

I  write and perform stand-up comedy in my spare time. For a long time, stand-up comedy was my only creative outlet and the only thing (until my wife and family came along) that kept me (reasonably) sane while trudging through the monotony of my day job.

I have been at my day job for over a decade. I am good at what I do, and I have even been reasonably successful at it. But it does not fulfill me spiritually. It took me a long time to realize that I was not happy with my career choice, and almost as long to get up the courage to do something about it.

Now it is time for me to take a chance on doing something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid, which is to pursue writing for a living. So here I am, embarking on a new career in copywriting/content marketing. I will be working freelance to start, at least until I can build a portfolio to help me secure a job with an agency somewhere down the line. So, if you or someone you know is in need of copywriting services please consider giving a newbie a chance. Since I’m just starting out my prices are very reasonable and what I lack in experience I will make up for with, enthusiasm, hard work and dedication. That much I can promise you.

Changing careers is fun and exciting, but also a little scary. I know that I have much to learn and a lot of hard work ahead of me before I am where I want to be, but I also know that I have the talent and dedication to make this work.

I’m not sure where all of this is going to lead me, but I am excited to find out.

Here goes nothing...
